Florida man charged in car crash killing 3

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) – A central Florida man faces several charges in a car crash that killed three people and seriously injured another.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says Edward McCoy of Lakeland was arrested Thursday on three counts of vehicular homicide and three counts of driving under the influence causing death, among other charges.

An affidavit says McCoy’s blood alcohol level was 0.234. Florida’s legal limit is 0.08. It wasn’t known Friday whether McCoy had an attorney.

The sheriff’s office says McCoy’s speeding pickup truck collided in a Lakeland intersection early Sunday with a car carrying four people. Dorothy Operhall of Mulberry and her common-law husband, Leonard Simmons, died at the scene.

Melinda Helbig of Rochester, Pa., also died at the scene. The sheriff’s office says Helbig’s husband remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
