OPENING STATEMENTS COULD BEGIN IN TAMPA MOM’S MURDER TRIAL

Opening statements could be delivered in the trial of Julie Schenecker, the military wife who is charged with killing her two teenagers while her husband was deployed overseas. The 53-year-old former Army linguist has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Last week, prosecutors, defense attorneys and Hillsborough County Judge Emmett Battles questioned dozens of potential jurors. On Friday, some potential jurors were excused after they said the images of dead children would be too traumatic for them. Others were excused because they either knew about the case or the anticipated three-week trial would be a hardship.

FLORIDA SHERIFF’S ASSOCIATION TO HONOR FALLEN OFFICERS

The Florida Sheriff’s Association is set to hold its annual memorial ceremony to honor fallen officers. Families, law enforcement members and other local community members will be on hand Monday afternoon to add seven officers’ names to the memorial wall at the FSA headquarters. Attorney General Pam Bondi is among the list of speakers.

UF STUDENTS ASKING FOR EARLY VOTING

University of Florida students are asking county officials to create an early voting site on campus. Student advocates delivered a petition with 1,800 signatures Friday to the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections. Their actions come after the Florida Division of Elections in February rejected the use of the Reitz Student Union Building as an early voting site for the 2014 elections. The site is used as a polling location on election day.

ROLLINS COLLEGES AWARDS DEGREE TO SLAIN WOMAN’S FAMILY

The family of a slain central Florida woman was awarded her Bachelor of Arts degree on Sunday during a graduation ceremony at Rollins College. Yessenia Suarez had a little over a semester left in school when she was killed last October. Her husband Luis Toledo is accused of killing Suarez and her two young children.

MARLINS TAKE TWO AGAINST DODGERS IN MIAMI

Jeff Baker hit an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Miami Marlins defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. The Marlins won two of three against the Dodgers, improving to 13-5 at home.
