LEGISLATIVE SESSION SET TO BEGIN
Gov. Rick Scott will kick off the 2014 legislative session by asking legislators to approve his tax cut package and by asking to keep tuition rates low. Scott’s State of the State speech Tuesday will be one of the highlights of the opening day of the 60-day session.
LAWMANKERS SCRUTINZE GUN LAWS
Florida’s gun-friendly nature will be scrutinized during the 2014 legislative session as bills that would modify the state’s “stand your ground” law and another allowing warning shots will be considered, a marked contrast from the 2013 session in which no major gun legislation was passed.
FLORIDA’S LARGEST MEDICAID HOSPITAL COULD LOSE MAJOR FUNDING
Large Miami-area hospitals serving many Medicaid patients and uninsured Floridians are expected to be hard hit under a new funding law. Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital could face $140 million in cuts after the law takes effect in July. Jackson Memorial serves more uninsured and Medicaid patients than any other hospital in Florida.
UNION CONTRACTS START FOR WALT DISNEY WORLD WORKERS
Contract negotiations are getting started between Walt Disney World officials and members of its unions. The contract talks between Disney World and its unionized employees start Monday. Workers covered in the contract include housekeeper, ride operators, fast food workers, cooks, dishwashers, beverage workers, custodians, ticket-takers and vacation planners.
PEDESTRIAN KILLED BY TRAIN
Officials say a person was struck and killed by a train in Seville on Sunday night. The person’s identity has not been released.
