TOWN MOURNS POLICE OFFICER’S SHOOTING DEATH
Officer Robert German was shot and killed after stopping two young people on foot in the Orlando suburb of Windermere early Saturday. It is the town’s first line-of-duty death. The two people is he believed to have stopped were found dead nearby. Authorities believe they committed suicide.
DEPT OF ED REVIVES BRIGHT FUTURE PROBE
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has revived a probe into Florida’s Bright Futures scholarship program, which critics charge is increasingly out of reach for the students who need it most, The Miami Herald reported.
PILOT SURVIVES SMALL PLANE CRASH INTO TAMPA BAY
The pilot of a small plane safely escaped after crashing his plane into the waters of Tampa Bay. The plane ditched into the water Sunday at around 2 p.m. about 300 to 400 yards southeast of the Coast Guard base at Bayboro Harbor.
GIRL, 15, DIES FROM INJURIES SUFFERED IN RACE TRACK CRASH
A 15-year-old Ocala girl is dead following a weekend crash at Bubba Raceway Park near Ocala. Authorities say it was her first time on the track and she was on her second lap when she apparently lost control and hit a concrete barrier.
LAWMAKERS CONSIDER FLOOD INSURANCE CHANGES
The Florida Legislature is moving forward with a proposal aimed at enticing private insurance companies to sell flood policies. It’s not clear that many private insurers will want to assume the risks of flooding in Florida and join two companies already writing policies.
