CRIME STOPPERS CHIEF FACES JAIL OVER ANONYMOUS TIP
The head of Miami-Dade County’s Crime Stoppers program could get jail time for contempt of court over his refusal to divulge details about an anonymous tip. A hearing is set Thursday morning for Richard Masten, the program’s executive director. Circuit Judge Victoria Brennan last week ordered Masten to provide information about the tip to a defense attorney in a cocaine possession case, setting a deadline for Thursday.
FLORIDA HOUSE TO VOTE ON WARNING SHOT BILL
The Florida House is expected to vote on the ‘warning shot’ bill that would allow people to fire a warning shot instead of retreating when threatened with death or bodily harm. The accompanying Senate bill will also be on the floor Thursday. The bill (HB 89) addresses “10-20-life” in self-defense cases. The 10-20-life law requires lengthy sentences for specific felony firearm convictions.
MENTALLY DISABLED MAN GUILTY OF SHOOTING FATHER
A mentally disabled man has been convicted of fatally shooting his adoptive father in central Florida. A Volusia County jury found 23-year-old Marcus White guilty of manslaughter Wednesday. He faces up to 30 years in prison, but the judge could give him less. Authorities say White fatality shot his sleeping father, Douglas White, in June 2011 in the family’s camper near New Smyrna Beach.
26 WWII VETERANS FROM FLORIDA HONORED BY FRANCE
France is giving 26 Florida veterans its highest distinction for fighting alongside the country during World War II. The French Consulate will award the veterans the insignia of the “Knight in the National Order of the Legion of Honor” on Thursday during a ceremony at the First Presbyterian Church in Boynton Beach. The Legion was founded in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte.
AUTOGRAPHED HULK HOGAN SHOE STOLEN FROM SHOP
Tampa Bay area authorities are investigating the theft of an autographed wrestling shoe once worn by Hulk Hogan. Clearwater police reported Wednesday that the shoe — valued at $5,500 — was stolen from the professional wresting icon’s Clearwater Beach shop.
