1 MAN DEAD FOLLOWING SOUTH FLORIDA WAREHOUSE FIRE
Investigators are trying to determine what caused a South Florida warehouse fire that left one man dead. The Broward Sheriff’s Office reports that Pompano Beach firefighters responded to the fire early Tuesday morning. Sheriff’s office homicide detectives arrived later that morning after the firefighters found the body of 53-year-old Robert Posley.
3 SENTENCED TO PRISON IN FLORIDA BANK ROBBERIES
Three people have been sentenced to lengthy prison sentences for their roles in the simultaneous robberies of two banks in St. Lucie County. A federal judge on Tuesday imposed a sentence of more than 13 years on 23-year-old Raven Simone Sayers, who pleaded guilty earlier to robbery and firearms charges. Co-defendant Ivory Lee Robinson III was sentenced previously to nearly 22 years behind bars. Another defendant got more than eight years.
REPUBLICAN JOLLY WINS FLORIDA CONGRESSIONAL RACE
Republican David Jolly is the winner of a hard-fought congressional election in Florida to replace the late Rep. Bill Young. With nearly 100 percent of the vote counted, The Associated Press says Jolly bested Democrat Alex Sink in a contest that attracted national attention and millions of dollars. The special election served as the first test of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul ahead of November’s midterm elections.
EISNAUGLE WINS GOP PRIMARY FOR FLORIDA HOUSE SEAT
Eric Eisnaugle has won the Republican special primary to replace a Florida House Republican who left office to lead an expressway authority. According to uncertified results, Eisnaugle took 85 percent of the vote, leaving his opponent, former Orange County School Board member Vicky Bell, with just 15 percent. Eisnaugle will go on to face Democrat Shaun Raja and write-in candidate Jeffrey Tepper in the April general election for the District 44 House seat. The district is located in Orange County.
PNJ HIRES NEW EXECUTIVE EDITOR
A native Midwesterner with a background in community journalism has been tapped as the new executive editor of the Pensacola News Journal. Lisa Nellessen-Lara is set to start March 27. She will oversee a staff of 32 editors, reporters and photographers, as well as the contributions of dozens of freelance writers. Nellessen-Lara succeeds Richard Schneider, who retired as the News Journal’s executive editor in August.
