FLORIDA LAWMAKERS TO TALK WATER FUNDING, NOT POLICY

Traverse Florida’s largest freshwater lake in an airboat, and you’ll find no sign of the turmoil that water levels caused last summer. The political waters in Tallahassee, though, are roiling over Lake Okeechobee and other hydrological woes, from Florida’s Big Bend to the state’s signature springs to a treasured estuary along the Atlantic. Residents, lawmakers and environmental advocates want the state to better manage its water resources.

SOUTH FLORIDA POLICE PIN 1990 SLAYING ON EXECUTED MAN

Police in Coral Springs say they have solved a woman’s 1990 slaying, with advances in DNA identification pinning the crime on a man executed in 2011 for other killings. Detectives say a new DNA test earlier this month conclusively links Oba Chandler to the strangulation death of 20-year-old Ivelisse Berrious Beguerisse, who never made it home after leaving her job at the Sawgrass Mills Mall on Nov. 27, 1990.

TEEN SPENDS 35 DAYS IN JAIL AFTER MISTAKEN ARREST

Three northeast Florida sheriff’s deputies have been disciplined after an arrest mix-up sent the wrong teenager to jail. The 17-year-old spent 35 days in the Clay County jail after being charged as an adult in a sexual battery case. One deputy also faces a suspension and a transfer.

FORMER UM FOOTBALL PLAYER CRITICAL FOLLOWING CRASH

A former University of Miami football player is in critical condition after the car he was driving rear-ended a semi-truck on MacArthur Causeway near Miami Beach. Police spokeswoman Vivian Hernandez said Tuesday that 24-year-old JoJo Nicolas was traveling westbound on the causeway just after 5 a.m. when his Lexus collided with the rear of the truck.

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, MAN CHARGED IN MOTHER’S DEATH

Authorities say a Clearwater man dropped off his 7-year-old daughter at a friend’s house before going to a sheriff’s office and confessing to killing his mother. Police say the girl was at home when Matthew Edward Lohoski allegedly killed his mother, Deborah Susan Lohoski. It wasn’t clear whether she saw or heard the killing. Matthew Lohoski was being held Tuesday at the Pinellas County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder.
