LEGISLATORS GEAR UP FOR FINAL WEEK OF SESSION
Florida legislators enter the final week of their 60-day session with lots of unfinished business, including whether to approve a strain of marijuana for medical use. The last few days could reverberate into this year’s election, especially since Gov. Rick Scott is now pushing hard for a tuition break to college students living in the state illegally. Scott last week publicly asked his fellow Republicans in the Florida Senate to let the measure come up for a vote even though some GOP senators have already denounced the measure as “pandering” to Hispanics.
JACKSONVILLE MAN SHOOTS AT POLICE WITH AK-47 ASSAULT RIFLE
A Jacksonville man has been jailed after shooting at a police officer with an AK-47 assault rifle. The officer returned fire and struck the man twice. A police officer was investigating a hit-and-run Sunday and approached a house in the 1000 block of Frazier Street where four men were in the yard. A witness told police Devon Rashad Spencer, 23, shot at the officer from a red sports utility vehicle in the front yard. Spencer was previously been convicted on a felony drug charge.
POLICE INVESTIGATE AFTER TEEN DROWNS IN POND
Police are investigating after a 15-year-old boy drowned in a Miami-Dade pond on Sunday while swimming with friend. Divers recovered his body late Sunday afternoon.

FLORIDA SHERRIFFS CONTINUING FIGHT AGAINST POSSIBLE LEGALIZATION OF MEDICAL MARIJUANA
The Florida Sheriff’s Association is set to make a large push against the legalization of marijuana. Voters will decide on the legalization of medical marijuana in November. The association sent an email to sheriffs across the state during the winter asking for their support. The Tampa Bay Times reported 63 of 67 sheriffs were in favor of opposing any measures to legalize the drug.
