FLORIDA LAWMAKERS OK NEW VOTING MAP FOR CONGRESS
The state Legislature has approved a new map for Florida’s congressional districts after a judge ruled that the former districts were drawn illegally to benefit Republicans. The Republican-controlled Legislature on Monday voted largely along partisan lines to approve a new map that alters seven of the state’s 27 congressional districts. The changes would make two seats slightly more competitive for Democrats.
OFFICIALS TO TOUR PUNTA GORDA 10 YEARS AFTER STORM
Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush will visit a southwest Florida community on the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Charley. Putnam and Bush are scheduled to mark 10 years since Charley hit Punta Gorda on Wednesday. They will meet with emergency management officials and the Enterprise Charlotte County Economic Council.
3 FLORIDA POLITICIANS MARK SOCIAL SECURITY’S BIRTHDAY
Three members of Congress from South Florida are marking the 79th anniversary of the passage of Social Security. Representatives Alcee Hastings, Ted Deutch and Patrick Murphy are holding a hearing in West Palm Beach on Tuesday to mark the occasion and to stress their support for the program. All three politicians are Democrats.
FLORIDA WOMAN DIES AFTER BEING HIT BY FALLING TREE
A 76-year-old northeast Florida woman is dead after being hit by a falling tree that her brother cut down. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reports that Eula Manahan of Keystone Heights was killed by the tree Monday after her brother, Al Norris, cut it down. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Mary Justino says Norris cut a wedge in the tree’s trunk so it would fall away from the house. However, wood rot in the bottom of the tree made it fall prematurely.
FLIGHTS START FROM ORLANDO TO GUADALAJARA
Nonstop flights from Orlando to Guadalajara, Mexico, are starting this November. Orlando International Airport officials said Monday that twice-weekly, nonstop flights to Guadalajara would start on Volaris Airlines in November. The airline already flies from Orlando International Airport to Mexico City.
