DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (AP) — About two dozen residents have been displaced after fire damaged their apartment building in Deerfield Beach.

The fire broke out late Monday.

Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue crews found heavy fire in a second-floor bedroom of one unit in the Deerfield Palms Apartments shortly before midnight.

Two women and their sons told firefighters they heard popping sounds and saw smoke.

The fire was contained to that apartment and the units on each side. Three units on the first floor also were damaged by smoke and water.

About 40 firefighters from three departments responded to the fire.

The American Red Cross Disaster Action Team is assisting those displaced by the fire.

The blaze is under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the state Fire Marshal.
