DAYTONA, Fla.- The search for a missing teen is over after human remains were found Tuesday belonging to the girl who went missing on June 22.
The teen’s grandmother, Pauline Chaffee, was notified via phone by police that Ashlyn Bowman’s remains had been found in the area she went missing from. Police said testing would take a couple of months before a positive ID could be officially matched.
Workers clearing land south of Pullman Road found the remains at around 11 a.m. Tuesday morning, Edgewater Police said. According to Chief Dave Arcieri, detectives were sent out to the scene to confirm it was human remains.
The medical examiner took the remains, which were mostly skeletal, to test and determine the identity and cause of death.
Bowman had lived with her grandmother for the past few years. Police did not tell Chaffee whether or not any of her 18-year-old granddaughters belongings were found at the scene.
The area where the remains were found is just two blocks north of the area where investigators were searching for Bowman last month. She was last scene at a residence near Rotary Park, a day after she had been seen jogging along West Park Avenue in front of the park on June 21.
Chaffee had last seen her granddaughter on Father’s Day, June 19. After that Bowman had told her she was going to visit her father in New Smyrna Beach, but then told Chaffee she ended up at a friends house instead. The next day Bowman asked her if she could stay the night at a friends house.
Bowman had a previous issue with drugs, but investigators found no clues related to her disappearance during a search of Rotary Park on July 20.
According to court records, Chaffee took temporary custody of Bowman in 2014 and petitioned to take Bowman because she thought it was in the girl’s “best interest.” Bowman was living with her mother, Carrie Roehl, in Daytona before the petition.
Bowman’s family members have began sharing pictures of her on social media, saddened that she had not been found alive.
