NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL – Jellyfish were a nuisance to swimmers in the Atlantic Ocean off New Smyrna Beach over the weekend.

Volusia County’s Beach Safety Ocean Rescue reported 406 jellyfish stings on Saturday and Sunday.

Capt. Tammy Marris says purple flags were placed on the beach to warn beachgoers about the jellyfish.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports lifeguards also performed 14 ocean rescues on Sunday. Surf conditions were moderate, but officials expect conditions to become rougher as Tropical Storm Cristobal passes offshore in the Atlantic.
