Barge Stuck On Anna Maria Island

The Coast Guard says a barge is stuck on a beach on Anna Maria Island.

A Coast Guard spokesman says at around 2:00 a.m., a tugboat was pushing two barges in the gulf. During the inclement weather, a 180-foot barge broke free.

That barge later got stuck on the beach.

The other barge is now anchored a few miles off shore.

Officials say there was no significant damage, but possibly a little damage to a seawall.

The owner of the barge has hired a contractor to remove the barge from the beach.

Currently, Coast Guard officials are also on scene.

At this time, county officials say there are no traffic problems on the Cortez Bridge.
