ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (May 22, 2014) – Beginning June 1 through September 30, St. Petersburg joins Manatee, Sarasota, and Pinellas Counties along with the city of Tampa in banning the use of fertilizers containing nitrogen or phosphorous for lawns and landscaping. During these months, summer rainstorms wash harmful fertilizer residue down storm drains and pollute our lakes, bays and Gulf of Mexico.
Your local garden center offers many summer-safe yard products to keep your lawn and landscaping green and growing through the summer months. You can also be Florida-friendly by applying iron or micronutrients such as zinc and manganese to your lawn. Fortifying your dirt with compost will also help, and buying Florida-friendly plants will thrive in the Florida heat and save you water. Thanks for complying with the fertilizer ban.
