FTC Suing Amazon About In-App Purchases

The Federal Trade Commission is suing Amazon alleging the online giant billed parents for unauthorized in-app purchases.

In the statement that was released Thursday, Amazon let children download apps on mobile devices such as Kindle Fires and the app would charge the parents without them knowing. The FTC also claims that when Amazon implemented in-app purchases back in 2011, they didn’t require passwords or anything of the like to prevent this.

“Even Amazon’s own employees recognized the serious problem its process created,” said FTC chairwoman Edith Ramirez in a statement. “We are seeking refunds for affected parents and a court order to ensure that Amazon gets parents’ consent for in-app purchases.”
