FLORIDA ENDURING POSSIBLY COLDEST NIGHT IN WINTER SEASON
Emergency management officials warned that Monday night was expected to be the coldest night of this winter season, and record-low temperatures were expected to be broken in north Florida. Shelters were opened around the state as a hard freeze warning was issued for the northern half of Florida. Temperatures were forecast to be in the upper 30s in South Florida overnight.
KILLER ON DEATH ROW FOR DECADES SCHEDULED FOR EXECUTION
A man convicted of abducting and killing a Miami couple and later stabbing a prison guard to death is set for execution at Florida State Prison. Askari Abdullah Muhammad, previously known as Thomas Knight, is scheduled to die by lethal injection Tuesday. He was first condemned to die in 1974.
FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY HAS 10 FINALISTS FOR PRESIDENT
Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater and former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux are among 10 semifinalists vying to become the next president of Florida Atlantic University. A university search committee on Monday came up with the list after getting more than 60 applications.
FORMER TOP SWISS BANKER IN FLORIDA FEDERAL COURT IN TAX EVASION CASE
A former top executive with Swiss bank UBS AG is headed to South Florida federal court for a hearing on fraud conspiracy charges stemming from a broad tax evasion investigation. Raoul Weil is scheduled to enter a plea Tuesday to the U.S. charges first filed in 2008. He was a fugitive until his arrest in October in Italy and was later extradited to the U.S.
FLORIDA STATE WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Florida State came from behind Monday night to beat Auburn in the final BCS championship game in Pasadena. A last-minute touchdown gave the Seminoles a 34-31 victory.
