MIAMI US ATTORNEY NAMED TO HOLDER ADVISORY BOARD
South Florida’s chief federal prosecutor has been named by Attorney General Eric Holder to a national advisory board. Holder announced this week that Miami-based U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer will be one of eight new top prosecutors on the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee. Each of the appointees will serve two-year terms.
JACKSON, KID ROCK HEAD SEAWORLD LINEUP
The show is going on. SeaWorld Orlando on Wednesday announced performers Alan Jackson and Kid Rock (pictured) will headline a concert series in which nine other performers dropped out following the release of a documentary critical of the marine park. Jackson will perform this upcoming weekend at the Bands, Brew & BBQ concert series, followed by Kid Rock the next weekend.
3 INDUCTED INTO FLORIDA CIVIL RIGHTS HALL OF FAME
Dr. Robert Hayling, James Johnson and Asa Randolph have been inducted into the Florida Civil Rights Hall of Fame. Gov. Rick Scott announced the new inductees Wednesday. Hayling, 94, has been hailed as the “father” of St. Augustine’s civil rights movement. Johnson, who died in 1938, was the first African-American admitted to the Florida bar since the end of Reconstruction. Randolph, who died in 1979, founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters labor union.
JUSTIN BIEBER PLEADS NOT GUILTY IN DUI ARREST
Justin Bieber has pleaded not guilty in to charges of DUI, resisting arrest and driving with an expired license in Florida. Court records show that Bieber’s attorney filed the written plea Wednesday in Miami-Dade County. Bieber already has an arraignment set for Feb. 14, but Florida law doesn’t require the 19-year-old pop star to be present.
FLORIDA GOVERNOR PROPOSES $74 BILLION BUDGET FOR 2014
Florida Gov. Rick Scott is proposing a nearly $74.2 billion budget for the coming year. The Republican governor announced his spending plan on Wednesday during the annual legislative planning meeting hosted by The Associated Press. State lawmakers will use the proposed budget as a framework for a final budget that will be passed during the annual session that starts in March.
