NEW UNEMPLOYMENT NUMBERS FOR FLORIDA DUE OUT
Florida’s latest unemployment numbers are coming out and could give another boost to incumbent Gov. Rick Scott. The state’s unemployment numbers for December will be released on Friday. The rate in the month of November was 6.4 percent. That’s the lowest the rate has been since July 2008.
NEW TV NETWORK LAUNCHED FOR VENEZUELAN EXPATS
A new television network aimed at the large Venezuelan expatriate population has launched in Miami. El Venezolano newspaper was founded in Florida in 1992 and now includes editions in Broward, Orlando and four countries in Latin America. On Wednesday the company launched “El Venezolano TV.”
Florida governor wants to boost job training efforts
Florida Gov. Rick Scott is calling for spending $30 million a year on new job training programs. Scott on Thursday announced the initiative during a stop at a convenience food manufacturer. The programs will be focused on fields in science, technology, engineering and math and high-demand areas.
SOUTHWEST FLORIDA FUNERAL HOME ADDS WINE CELLAR
A southwest Florida funeral home is adding an unusual new amenity: wine. Hodges Funeral Home is installing a wine room. It’s a space where families can congregate for a death-adjacent catered reception, a modern substitute for an hour-long sobfest on wooden church pews. Funeral director and general manager Seth Minso says more and more people wanted celebrations of life instead of funerals.
2 GIANT OTTER PUPS BORN AT ZOO MIAMI
Two giant otter pups have been born at Zoo Miami. The brothers were born Dec. 19 and have been kept in a secluded den with their parents. The endangered infants represent the fifth successful litter for Kara and Witoto at the zoo. A zoo spokesman says the pups will not be placed on exhibit for several more weeks.
